The Incredible Growing Craze of Tablets: A Buying Guide!

Ever since Apple made tablets cool with the introduction of the iPad in 2010, everyone has wanted a tablet at some point. Ever since, there has always been a certain group of people who swear by the functionality of tablets, and some prefer them to TVs for media consumption. Some gift their children a tablet to introduce them to the internet, and some give their parents one to keep them entertained with the big screen.

Tablets are not only a big alternative to phones. They’re so much more. They help millions of people present their creativity to the world with the big canvas, some people use it to draw, some to watch movies while travelling, while some schools offer their students one for academic work.

Their Growing Popularity as a Portable Device

Let’s be honest, we cannot carry desktop-sized computers everywhere, and some people do not prefer laptops, or their operating systems, or maybe full-fledged computers aren’t just their cup of tea. Tablets, even though they have always been unable to place themselves as a logical option in the market of computers, have positioned themselves as the best preferred option for travelling after smartphones. Tablets offer a bigger screen than phones and are significantly lighter than laptops. With the ever-growing app support for the devices in the Android and Apple world, more and more people are choosing tablets for their functionality that they offer, with iPads being the most preferred choice.

Why is the Demand for Tablets Growing?

The late 2010s saw the decline in the popularity of tablets, due to many reasons, like phones growing in screen size. The Covid era revived them, with many working professionals and students buying them for studying and Zoom calls. Much market research shows that the demand is only going to grow in 2025. Samsung and Apple have been the people’s choice when it comes to the global market, but a few other brands like Xiaomi, HONOR, and OnePlus are trying to make their presence visible lately.

How Important is a Tablet to You?

Tablets are designed to be used as a secondary display for a computer as well as a canvas for letting the artist in you show their creativity. Before buying a tablet, you need to know your use case. Whether you want one for your studies, for your parents, for your artist side, or for your cinephile side, there’s a tablet for everyone.

Factors to consider before buying a tablet.

The Display

Screens are what differentiate a tablet from a phone. Phones were never meant to be as big as they are today, but the growing need for better components inside, like batteries and cooling solutions, has made them bigger, slowly eating into the tablet market.

As it turns out, size does matter, and you get a better experience with every extra inch you have. A bigger display will allow you to watch movies well, and better display technology (like AMOLED) also helps. However, the most important spec is the display resolution. You don’t want a pixelated display, do you? For budget tablets, make sure the model you’re looking for has at least a 2K resolution for improved clarity. Go for even higher numbers as you go higher in price. One more spec you must keep an eye on is the refresh rate. We strongly suggest against 60Hz displays. At least 90Hz is necessary, as lower refresh rates are more noticeable on bigger displays.

Battery

Look for battery cells at least 7000mAh in size if you’re buying budget models, and for the top-end models, look for even bigger cells.

Processor and RAM

A good processor is needed to drive a bigger display with a higher resolution. Also, most people use tablets for multitasking, for which a good processor with a decent amount of RAM is needed. Budget tablets need to have at least 6GB of RAM, even if the most demanding task they are going to be used for is media consumption. We suggest going for (at least) 8GB RAM for notetaking and 12GB for more demanding tasks like photo and video editing, or a more professional workload.

Storage

128GB is the minimum number you should look for. Over time, the storage fills up, movies and other documents stay in your storage, and you wish you had a little bit extra. It’s always better to buy a tablet with ample storage than to regret it later. For heavy users, 256GB storage, and even more if needed.

Connectivity

Most tablets are Wi-Fi enabled. Some offer cellular data connectivity. If you think you will need to travel a lot with your tablet without a Wi-Fi hotspot from your phone, getting a tablet with cellular mobile data support would be a wise choice.
