Apple released their iPhone Duo a few days ago. The iPhone Duo is already thin enough; when open, it’s just 5.2mm (the thinnest iPhone), but it’s a bit heavy, around 254g, so improvements in thinness or weight are a bit harder to do and less useful for now, and it is known that the brand’s aim for the second-gen, that is, iPhone Duo 2, will not be to reduce thickness and weight. But Apple will focus on making the Duo 2’s inside layout more efficient, and mainly on how the internal parts are stacked and arranged.
It’s the thinnest iPhone when unfolded, but its heaviest iPhone on the other hand, due to its dual screen, a titanium hinge and frame, and the heavy dual batteries.
Compared to the iPhone Duo, making it thinner or lighter might risk battery life, durability, and camera quality, so Apple might be prioritising performance and design efficiency. Also, for a foldable, more internal space is needed.
Apple will be focusing on arranging the logic board, cameras, batteries, antennas, and hinge mechanics in a better way to free up important space.
Better stacking means better heat management, battery size, and camera module size without making the phone bigger.
Other improvements can also be made by resolving the extreme space issues in the right corner of the inner screen, the under-display camera can be moved to that corner, matching it with the front camera on the outer display.
