Apple Watch Series 12 is here. Let’s see if it’s a good enough upgrade from the previous generation’s Series 11.
Display
The Apple Watch Series 12 features the same display as the previous generation, but it comes with Ceramic Shield 2 for better protection, making the front glass 60% tougher than the previous generation’s Ion-X glass.
Performance
The S11 chip features a new always-on processor, which has a new secure exclave where a dedicated audio buffer securely manages the raw audio for processing. It also has a faster CPU, GPU, and NPU, with the CPU having a 50% larger last-level cache despite housing the same core architecture; all of the CPU, GPU, and NPU are derived from the A20 Pro, and the S11 is their most powerful wearable chip yet.
Design
The Apple Watch Series 12 is available in 42mm and 46mm configurations. Aluminium finishes include dark bronze, black and light gold, as well as the space grey finish. Titanium finishes include a new radiant gold colour alongside natural titanium. The Apple Watch Series 12 also comes in a ceramic version, including pearl white and night blue colours. Sand and navy blue sports bands that come with the ceramic version of Series 12 will feature a ceramic pin-and-tuck closure designed to pair perfectly with the case.
Software
The Series 12 watch will be running Watch OS 27 out of the box, which includes a lot of upgrades, including a dynamic app grid featuring the icons for five Siri-suggested apps, which are the user’s most-used and recently used Watch apps.
Smart stack widget suggestions, which surface when they are most relevant, like parked car suggestions from Maps or a birthday message suggestion on a close contact’s birthday.
Workout Buddy on Apple Watch now works even without the iPhone being nearby. Workout Buddy also incorporates even more fitness data when delivering motivational insights and is available in addition to English.
Apple Intelligence
With the powerful S11 chip, the latest Apple Intelligence models on iPhone, and the private compute cloud, the Watch Series 12 offers a new class of Apple Intelligence features. Audio intelligence helps users stay aware of the world around them.
Sound Recognition: The feature can alert users who are deaf or hard of hearing using the Apple Watch even when the iPhone isn’t with them. This feature listens for sounds like sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying and uses on-device intelligence to notify users when detected.
Live Rewind: The feature can help users recall what was just said in a conversation. A double press of the Digital Crown shows the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet.
Battery
The Watch Series 12 offers up to 24 hours of everyday battery life and offers up to 10 hours of battery life during an outdoor workout—25% more than the previous model. The Watch Series 12 also offers faster charging: just 15 minutes of charging for up to 12 hours of additional battery life—50% more than the previous model—so users can quickly recharge while getting ready for the day.
Fitness Tracking
The Series 12 Watch is re-architected to provide continuous high-fidelity health monitoring using the health sensing system, featuring new optical and electrical heart sensors. Using this system and the S11 chip, the Apple Watch Series 12 offers the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.
With larger, power-efficient green LEDs on the optical heart sensor, the Apple Watch Series 12 now measures heart rate every five seconds, all day long. This continuous, passive measurement delivers deeper insights into a user’s fitness and psychological state while making exercise and movement activity rings even more accurate.
HRV, a key indicator of stress and recovery, is now measured up to 24 times more often and is available to view in a new section of the Heart Rate app. Apple Watch provides two separate variants of HRV for identifying daily signals of a user’s health status. Recovery HRV is better for identifying daily signals of stress and recovery; overall HRV is best for insights into a user’s broader health, including cardiovascular health.
Watch Series 12 introduces Readiness, a new feature that analyses a user’s recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to offer insight into their capacity for the day ahead. Readiness provides a single 0-10 score with a clear, actionable recommendation: Recover, Pace yourself, Ready, or Go For It. Readiness updates throughout the day as new data comes in to reflect, for example, an intense workout or a shift in daytime vitals.
The pedometer model has been completely redesigned with a new machine learning algorithm to provide more accurate distance measurements during indoor walk or run workouts, and the S11 chip allows for more accurate step counts all day. As a result, the Apple Watch Series 12 now offers the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch. The S11 chip also enables the brand-new Steps complication; users can track their step count in real time from their watch face.
Pricing
The Apple Watch Series 12 comes in three variants: aluminium, titanium, and ceramic. The aluminium model is priced at INR 56,900 for the 42mm, and the 46mm is priced at 62,900; the titanium model’s 42mm model is priced at 99,900, and the 46mm model is priced at 104,900; and the ceramic’s 42mm variant starts at 124,900, while the 46mm variant is priced at 130,900. The aluminium features the ceramic shield 2, while both the titanium and ceramic come with sapphire crystal display protection.
