The Problem With The ‘R’

Every year, OnePlus launches an ‘R’ edition of their flagship phone—a toned-down version at a cheaper price like the OnePlus 12R, or OnePlus 13R (launching soon). Even though it is relatively affordable, it costs around ₹40,000, and the talking point is that it lacks a telephoto lens. In a competitive market where even phones in the ₹30,000 price segment come with a telephoto lens, like the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, the OnePlus R series costs significantly more than that and doesn’t provide optical zooming. Instead, it features a 2 MP “macro” lens, which is just a gimmick, as it takes low-quality, often unusable images.

This trend has continued for a while now. Starting in 2021 with the OnePlus 9R, its successors, the 10R, 11R, and 12R, did not have a telephoto lens. They all came with a macro lens instead. Users have expressed their dismay at this trend of OnePlus shipping phones with a macro lens online.

The Good News

That unfortunate trend changes with the OnePlus 13R, as sources like @OnLeaks, on behalf of 91mobiles, have reported that the OnePlus 13R will feature an additional 50 MP lens with f/2.0 aperture, assumed to be a telephoto lens. This makes the camera configuration a 50/8/50 (main/ultrawide/telephoto) from a 50/8/2 (main/ultrawide/macro) on the 12R. Being a massive jump in megapixels and function, this will empower users by giving them the ability to zoom further while taking shots without having to compromise on quality as compared to digital zoom.

The 12R was also rumoured to have this change, but OnePlus didn’t do it. But this time, things have changed, as OnePlus is once again embracing its “OG” roots with developments like the OxygenOS 15 update, which brings back the “Never Settle” easter egg, and the lifetime green line warranty. So we can believe that this time, it’s for sure. It is a much-anticipated addition, as users have been frustrated with OnePlus for not including a telephoto lens. The tech community rejoices with this rumour, hoping that it won’t be just a rumour.

What It Means For The Market

This completely changes OnePlus’ game in the premium-budget segment. (The premium-budget or mid-range segment can be defined as devices that offer a blend of premium features at a price point that’s significantly lower than flagship models but higher than traditional budget phones.) In 2025, OnePlus will give tough competition to Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy A56 and S25FE. OnePlus will now have the edge in this segment with the OnePlus 13R’s telephoto lens and OxygenOS 15, which are considerably one of the best Android skins.

However, it is to be noted that this change might bring a price hike, anywhere between ₹5000 and ₹10,000. Still, consumers will be able to avail bank offers to reduce the price. It will bring a lot to the table, as rumours further suggest that it will house a 6000 mAh battery and a confirmed Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

Conclusion

The OnePlus 13R will be easily recommendable because of its great value for money. Some like to call it a “flagship-killer killer,” as it provides a bang for the buck. OnePlus is doing a great job with its new phone releases, and it can be assumed that it’s going to be a great year for both buyers and the company.
