21Motorola today launched their latest budget 5G smartphone, the Motorola G85. It has been priced at ₹16,999 including all offers which might seem like a very good deal. But is it? Let’s find out!
Table of Contents
Design and Build
G85 continues to feature the sleek and lightweight form factor Motorola is known for. The curved screen smoothens out with the frame and vegan leather back offering a good in-hand feel and appealing to a wide range of consumers.Display
The G85 features a 6.3-inch FHD+ pOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. It is a curved display with a ~91% screen to body ratio. The display has minimal bezels and has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection with 1200 nits peak brightness. There is no HDR or 4K playback on either YouTube or Netflix, as the processor 6s Gen 3 doesn’t support either of it. Colours are tuned pretty well.Performance
Motorola G85 comes with “India’s first” Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 processor with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage. This is the part where this phone cuts the costs. Mind to believe this is the third generation of G8X series with Snapdragon 695 (Yes!). The “new” 6s Gen 3 is nothing but a slightly rebranded version of 695. The price to performance ratio is average at best. It lacks out to most of the phones in terms of performance and other tasks.Cameras
G85 features a 50MP Sony LYTIA LYT 600 main camera and an 8MP Ultrawide. Photos come in natural and the pictures are generally good. There are some hit or miss areas like that in portrait mode, highlight control and sharpening. A part of these issues are again due to the lacking ISP of 6s Gen 3 aka 695. In general cameras felt okay for the price.Software
Booting up with new Hello UI based on Android 14, the G85 features quite a lot of new features and a bunch of other AI stuff unlike previous G series smartphones. The software is neat, has very less bloatwares aside from some in-house applications. The phone is supported to get 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of security updates. There are some glitches here and there in UI which is due to the lacking processor. Aside from that the software is one of the best in this price.Battery and Charging
The G85 comes with 5000mAh battery and supports 33W charging which should take the phone from 0-100 in about a hour and 15 minutes. Battery life is good in early testings even though there aren’t much elements to push this budget device onto. The phone comes with a charger in the box which isn’t present on some other (IYKWIM)!Additional Features
The G85 has an in display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, and other common features in this price category. Curved display is another rarity in this price and this is a go to option for those enthusiasts.G85 lacks the 3.5mm Headphones jack which G84 had but still retains the Micro SD card slot which is a great decision. Conclusion
The new Moto G85 is a good allrounder even though the 6s Gen 3 is a hard recommended in the launch price. It’s a no brainer deal if you get it for around ₹15,000.People who are interested in gaming or even a slight bit of perform should choose other options like iQOO Z9 or new CMF Phone 1 which have a much better processor.
In short, the G85 carries over the legacy of G8X series which was good features in a limited price. Even though the SoC is a big question mark, it gets all other features right! What is your opinion about the phone, do comment below.
