Design and Build

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra stands out immediately due to its unconventional design choices. Consumers can opt for either a vegan leather or a wooden back, a rarity in today’s smartphone market. The Nordic Wood version is made from actual wood fibers, coated to retain texture and resist water and skin oil. This design choice not only provides a unique aesthetic but also ensures a firm grip, making the phone feel sturdy and premium.

The phone is IP68-rated, offering resistance to dust and water, and features a curved Gorilla Glass Victus on the front. The aluminium frame, subtly curved for better handling, adds to the phone’s robustness. The vegan leather variant is available in sophisticated shades like Forest Grey and Peach Fuzz, offering a more traditional but equally premium feel.

Display

The Edge 50 Ultra is equipped with a 6.7-inch P-OLED display, boasting a resolution of 1220 x 2712 pixels. This screen supports 10-bit color depth, a 144Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+ for enhanced video streaming. The peak brightness of the display reaches an impressive 2500 nits, ensuring clear visibility even under direct sunlight.

The curved glass edges add to the sleek look, while the under-display fingerprint sensor ensures seamless unlocking. The display is not just about looks; it promises an immersive viewing experience, perfect for multimedia consumption and gaming.

Performance

Under the hood, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset. Although not the absolute fastest in the market, this processor is expected to deliver robust performance comparable to high-end competitors. It is paired with either 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and offers 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, ensuring smooth multitasking and ample space for all your apps and media, Do I wish they launched another lower-spec variant to bring the starting price down? Yes.

However, the early reviews suggest that the phone has moderate throttling and heating issues. Here are links to a few reviews on YouTube mentioning the same.

Camera System

The Edge 50 Ultra’s camera setup is particularly noteworthy. The primary camera features a 50MP sensor with an OIS lens, promising sharp and stable shots. Complementing this is a 64MP telephoto camera with a periscope lens offering 3x optical zoom and up to 6x lossless magnification. The ultrawide camera also boasts a 50MP sensor and supports macro photography, providing versatility in shooting options. Additionally, the front houses another 50MP camera for high-quality selfies.

After the launch of Motorola Edge 50 Pro, Moto seems to have stepped up their Photography game. Now their camera processing algorithm has been improved and the portrait mode in the camera has also been improved by a huge margin.

Battery and Charging

The phone is powered by a 4500mAh battery, which might seem modest compared to some competitors, but it is supported by impressive charging capabilities. The Edge 50 Ultra supports 125W fast wired charging, 50W fast wireless charging, and even 10W reverse wireless charging. These features ensure that the device can be charged quickly and efficiently, minimizing downtime.

Software and Additional Features

Running on clean Android 14, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra offers a near-stock Android experience with some useful Motorola customizations. The UI is designed to be intuitive, providing a smooth user experience. Motorola has also committed to delivering three OS updates and four years of security patches, ensuring the device remains secure and up-to-date.

Competition

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra vs. the competition

Other brands have launched phones with similar specs for a fraction of a price.

The POCO F6 is an excellent phone with better heat management, which is a good phone if you want to purchase a phone for the 8s Gen 3 performance only. Xiaomi CIVI also rocks the same processor and is also equipped with a LEICA-tuned camera.

OnePlus 12 often comes for under Rs. 60,000, and is a better phone to buy for any of your needs, if you are unable to grab the phone for its attractive launch price.

Now, the biggest competitor to the Motorola Edge 50 ultra, is the iQOO 12. It sells for around 50,000 Rs. and is a great deal as well.

Conclusion

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra brings a compelling mix of unique design, robust performance, and versatile camera capabilities to the budget-flagship segment. While it may not have the largest battery, its advanced charging options and premium build quality make it a strong contender. As the market heats up, the Edge 50 Ultra’s blend of innovative materials and high-end specs makes it a device worth considering for anyone looking to get flagship features without the flagship price tag.

If you don’t have a problem with the uncertainty of updates, this phone might be the one to get. And if you can wait for sales or cannot grab the early-bird offers which bring the price to 50,000 Rs, which would have been a decent price to buy the Edge 50 Ultra for, Get the OnePlus 12, and for the current launch price, iQOO 12 would be a great alternative.
