Apple has launched its MacBook Neo, which is a budget-centric MacBook focusing on students and light users. It seems to provide great value at $499 for students (student offer applied) in the U.S., but outside the U.S., it’s a different case.

Apple MacBook Neo has lots of compromises. Major ones are a non-backlit keyboard, no haptic touchpad, 8GB RAM, and no Touch ID in the base variant. Also, it has only 20W Charging (no MagSafe charging port), only one USB 3.0 Port while the other Type-C is rated only for USB 2.0 Speeds. Negligible for the price: It doesn’t support Wi-Fi 7, No True Tone, a recycled aluminium enclosure, and only a 36.5 Watt Hr Battery.
Focusing on India, Apple MacBook Neo is considered decent for the price compared to value for money (VFM) outside. The fact that you need to add ₹10K for the 512GB variant just for Touch ID is a gimmick.
Aside from the colours, the best option would be getting an Apple M1 Air or M2 Air (lightly used) if you need a MacBook for studies. Apple MacBook Neo starts from ₹70,000, and for ₹10k more, you can get an M2 Air, which is better in almost all aspects.

Coming to specifications, it has a 13-inch IPS Display with 60Hz refresh rate with up to 219 PPI, it’s powered by A18 Pro *has a CPU core less than 16 pro, 8GB RAM, 16-hour battery life (M1 Air has 18 Hrs), 1 USB 3 Type-C Port, 1 USB 2 Port, 3.5mm headphone jack. You can connect one external display at 4K 60 Resolution. It has a 1080p webcam and dual side speakers.

Pricing
Note that 8/256GB has no Touch ID and costs ₹69,900, and for Touch ID, you should go for ₹79,900 (not worth it) for Touch ID and 8/512GB.
