The OnePlus 11R has a wonderful primary camera, an okay ultrawide lens, and a questionable macro lens. This article will provide a lens comparison to test the digital zoom of the primary lens up against the dedicated “macro” lens of the OnePlus 11R.
The OnePlus 11R was launched on the 7th of February, 2023, with the base variant starting at ₹39,999. The main camera of the OnePlus 11R is a 50 MP Sony IMX890 sensor, which excels in daylight photography. It has an aperture of f/1.8 and an equivalent focal length of 24mm. The ultrawide lens is a comparatively weaker 8 MP lens with an aperture of f/2.2. The third lens is a 2 MP macro lens. Stating the obvious, a 2 MP macro lens is a gimmick, mostly used to fill the third camera slot when phone manufacturers want to cut costs by excluding a telephoto lens.
Let’s begin with the comparison by seeing if you’re better off taking images by zooming digitally, or by using the dedicated macro lens. The zoomed image will be on the left, and the macro image on the right.

The zoomed one gets the point by a mile. It looks much better in this instance. The second one seems like it’s straight out of 2008. Not a good start.

Both images give different narratives. Although the first image lacks the finer details of the flower, it does have a lovely blur. However, the first one appears more practical, particularly for social media. That gives digital zoom two points.

Okay, now this one has competition. The macro gives a bit more detail when compared to the zoom. Although the zoom gives bokeh, it’s warm and lacks the intricate details of the leaf. For this one, I may have to hand it off to the macro.

No doubt, the digital zoom did better. The macro lens could not have outperformed the primary lens in this situation. With the digital zoom, the bokeh and details were better captured. Point to the digital zoom.
Verdict and Thoughts
The winner must be obvious by now. The digital zoom wins it. So, you’re better off just zooming with the primary lens instead of using the generously added macro lens. Zooming captures most of the details, adds a blur and is usable, whereas, the images from the macro lens look like they were taken 20 years ago.
Now, imagine the potential if this phone had a telephoto lens. Considering the ₹40k price tag in a market where even ₹30k phones get zoom lenses. The OnePlus 11R not getting a zoom lens is really unfortunate. Instead, OnePlus decided to add a 2MP “macro” lens to fill the gap for the third camera. This phone would’ve been better without it. Quality over quantity should be prioritized, but they didn’t think about the users. OnePlus still didn’t understand their mistake and didn’t give the successor of this phone, the 12R, a telephoto lens. Instead, it also received the 2 MP macro lens. I hope OnePlus realise their problem and give the 13R its deserving telephoto lens.
