5 Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong

Every brand wants to earn more profit and they do every possible thing to do that. One of the main reasons for good sales of a smartphone is its features. The more features a phone has, the more chances it has to sell well in the market. To make the device look better than the competition, smartphone brands often give some gimmick features in their devices which are generally of no use but brands cut some important features behind the wall. The buyer is innocent, agrees to pay more for these gimmick features, and regrets later. In this article, we will tell you 5 Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong.

Rebranding Old Processors

Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong

One thing that most of the smartphone and chip manufacturers are doing nowadays is that they rebrand an old processor and naming it in such a way that it sounds more powerful than the competition but in reality, it’s weaker.

You must be thinking about how just a new name of a processor can make it look more powerful than the competition. Let me clear your doubts! There are two processors – Dimensity 7200 and Dimensity 7300. Tell me which one is more powerful by looking at the names! You must be laughing at me thinking that the 7300 is powerful and this is what naming means but my friend, you are wrong! Dimensity 7200 is more powerful be it CPU or GPU.

Now you might be thinking that at least 7300 is a new processor which is correct. It’s a successor of Dimensity 7050 and could be named 7060 or 7100 but this was done intentionally to show it more powerful than 7200.

This is not all! Sometimes, the chip makers don’t even make many changes and just rebrand the old processor in such a way that it sounds powerful. The latest example is Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 which is a rebranded version of the Snapdragon 695. The 695 is a 3-year-old chipset which was then used in the 20K price range but now after 3 years, many new processors have arrived in the market and they are much more powerful but some brands are still launching phones with this processor in the 20K price range.

A person who’s even a little bit aware about the market knows that 695 is not acceptable at this price but the chip maker rebranded the chip in such a way that it sounds powerful and new. By looking at the name, 6s Gen 3 looks more powerful than the 6 Gen 1 but in reality, the 6 Gen 1 is a powerful chip, and not only it’s more powerful, it doesn’t have hardware limitations like the 695 which are – no HDR video playback support, no 4K recording support, and a weaker ISP.

695 is a good chipset if you get it in a phone that costs 10-12K but it’s not acceptable if it’s used in a higher-priced phone. There are many options which are better like – Dimensity 7050, 7200, Snapdragon 6 gen 1, 7s Gen 2, etc.

One more thing that some smartphone brands did was that they added an adjective in the last processor’s name but it was the same chipset. Some examples are Dimensity 7200 Pro and 7200 Ultra which are just the regular 7200 but the brands did this to show their processor as better.

The tip is to not fall for any phone by just seeing the new processor. Compare the specs with the competition and then decide or keep reading our articles, and we will compare them for you.

Military Grade Durability

Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong

One of the 5 Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong is Military Grade Durability. You might be thinking that it’s a good thing if a smartphone is durable, it is! But marketing a bad phone on its durability isn’t! While every smartphone should be durable enough to handle some drops, it’s not meant to throw or play with it.  On top of it, the brand isn’t taking any responsibility if your phone gets damaged but you buy a bad product thinking at least it’s durable and it won’t break and you regret it later.

So, it’s better to choose a better device instead of just buying it because the brand is promising it to be durable, and do remember! Always use your phone with carefulness because you bought it with your hard-earned money, you didn’t get it for free so don’t behave like you got one!

Extra High Peak Brightness

Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong

Till last year, the peak brightness nits in most smartphones used to be around 1500-1600 nits, and the display was considered bright enough but nowadays, we are hearing big numbers like 4000 nits, 5000 nits, 7000 nits, etc and it feels like a race among the smartphone brands to make the brightest display but if we compare these displays with the old ones, there isn’t any major difference.

The reason behind this is that your display never reaches that high brightness in normal use and this is how this high peak brightness becomes a gimmick. The highest that your smartphone’s display can reach is the HBM (High Brightness Mode) brightness which is generally 1200-1500 nits and it reaches that super high brightness only when you watch HDR content but a very small number of people watch HDR content and even if you watch, 1200-1500 nits is more than enough and this high peak brightness is nothing more than a gimmick.

Let me tell you a fun fact! A popular Chinese smartphone brand recently launched a phone with 3000 nits peak brightness and here we are talking about the brightness for HDR content but that phone’s processor didn’t support HDR playback and its display will never reach that brightness level. If this is not called a gimmick then what’s a gimmick? This is nothing but a cheap marketing technique to sell a bad product. Always check the HBM brightness and be a smart consumer.

Advertising Virtual RAM as real RAM

Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong

This is no doubt the biggest gimmick feature in smartphones! Nowadays, many buyers are aware that having more RAM in your smartphone makes it fast. If your device has more RAM, it will keep the App running in the background for a longer time and if you have left an app opened in the background, it will probably start on the same page where you left it but if the RAM is not sufficient, your smartphone will restart the app.

RAM is an important part of a smartphone but everything adds a fixed cost to it and so is the RAM. The more RAM it will have, the more increase in the price will happen and that’s why budget phones have less RAM.

To counter the issue of less RAM, many smartphone brands introduced Virtual RAM feature in their smartphones. Brands are claiming that when your smartphone’s RAM is full, a part of your phone’s storage will temporarily work as RAM. This sounds cool, doesn’t it? Everyone thought that this would be very useful for the phones that have less RAM but it didn’t work like how we expected it to do.

This feature turned out to be a gimmick and the brands started taking benefit of it to market their phones as their phone has more RAM than the competition. If a phone had 4GB RAM and 4GB Virtual RAM, the brands started to advertise it as 8GB RAM which is completely wrong. To avoid any trouble later, they added a “*” in the start but customers, who didn’t know about this, fell in the marketing trap and bought the phone thinking it had 8GB RAM whereas the truth was something different.

Always check the real RAM capacity of your phone, not the so-called “Total RAM”.

Selling a bad product in the name of IP rating

Things That Smartphone Brands Are Doing Wrong

Recently a brand launched an overpriced phone with an IP69 rating and they claimed that their smartphone can survive inside the water and drops too but think practically! Are you buying a phone to throw it or to wash it? No! The fun fact here is that the brand won’t replace your phone if it breaks or water enters the device but many buyers damaged their phone by throwing it in water after seeing the misleading ads.

If the device is IP rated, it has more chance of survival if it accidentally falls in water but having the latest IP rating doesn’t guarantee that it will survive water damage. IP68 is also enough if you are getting a much better product. I am not saying that IP rating is a gimmick but selling a bad phone in the name of IP rating surely is.

Choose an overall better product that suits your requirements.

Very informative post. Keep up the good work. Brands are releasing new smartphones just like monsoon frogs but most of them are likely e-waste.
