Realme 13 Pro Series: Exciting and Boring yet…

Realme India has started to tease the upcoming realme 13 Pro Series, just six months into the launch of 12 Pro series. Being advertised as the new revolution of smartphone cameras, the phones are set to launch on 30th of July. Let’s see if it is actually true! Realme 13 Pro series

Spec Overview of realme 13 Pro series

Hardware wise, there don’t seem to be much of an upgrade on Realme 13 Pro+. It comes with an LYT701 main camera which is a rebrand of the IMX890 in 12 Pro+. They have upgraded the ultrawide from an 8MP to 16MP and the periscope camera has been switched from OV64B to LYT600. The other functionalities like display, speakers, etc are very similar to 12 Pro+. According to leaks, it also packs in the same 7s Gen 2 like previous generation Pro+.

Coming to realme 13 Pro, it’s a bad news. From leaks, they have dunked the 2x telephoto from 12 Pro and for worse it’s an 8+2 secondary camera setup. It also comes with 7s Gen 2 like Pro+. Rest of the cameras, display and other specifications are same as 12 Pro. It also comes with a Hyperimage+ branding which might be an algorithm developed by Realme including AI models, the use cases and features are yet unknown.

Hyperimage+ on Realme 13 Pro series

Design

Realme 13 Pro series comes with a “Monet” themed design which are inspired from mural paintings. Until now they have teased two colours, Gold and Purple which look amazing. This time the phones don’t come in a vegan leather but a textured back. It is yet to be seen it the back is of glass or just a polymer finish. The phones keep circular camera layout like previous generation but now comes with a “Hyperimage+” marketing term on the lens. Dimensions of phones are very similar to 12 series.

The phone also retains the traditional curved displays we are observing in Realme number series since 10 Pro+ which was the first phone in this segment to bring a curved display. It will be a 6.7 inch FHD+ OLED displays with 120Hz refresh rate. It might come with LTPO which means better battery life.

Software and AI

The marketings of Realme 13 Pro series are focused on one thing, AI. They are advertising the phone as an AI machine which will take cameras on a smartphone to another level. Most of these features are yet unknown but it will surely come with the AI features which we saw in GT 6 and 6T. It also comes with RealmeUI 5.0 based on Android 14 with 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates. This is the exact same update promise 12 Pro series comes with. Thus the software will get just 2-3 patches more compared to 12 Pro series.

Opinion

The upcoming Realme 13 Pro series brings in some amount of improvements to their predecessors and a big step up in design but the question remains, what is it’s need? Realme 12 Pro series launched just 6 months back which is the exact same phone except one or two differences. 13 Pro seems to be a big downgrade from 12 Pro in terms of cameras. I don’t get the need for smartphone brands to launch a new series every six months, especially when they don’t pack anything new at all.

This is especially true for Realme who have already launched about 16 phones this year in India under different brandings which leads to a lot of issues for consumers. They even messed up the regions while giving update to GT 6T. Such things don’t give assurance to consumers who want to purchase the smartphone.

Conclusion

That being said, the Realme 13 Pro series offers some upgrades as well as downgrades over it’s predecessor. More of the AI features and software tricks are yet to be seen which I am hopeful of. Hardware wise it’s a bit of a mess.
