OnePlus 13R: The Most Affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Phone?

OnePlus launched the flagship OnePlus 13 series on January 7. For the past two generations, the company’s number series has been very promising in terms of price-to-performance ratio; the OnePlus 13 and 13R are no different. From performance, cameras to the smooth software experience, the company has tried to build an all-rounder smartphone.

The OnePlus 13R is a special attraction for many enthusiasts. It is the most improved successor to the previous 12R. The lack of a telephoto sensor and base storage configuration are the aspects that the company has emphasized. Let’s discuss in detail what the OnePlus 13R offers.

Build and Appearance

The rear is made up of a glass body and the frames are of Aluminium. The phone features Gorilla Glass 7i protection at the back and front. However, it has only IP65 water resistance certification, while the competition is providing IP68 + IP69 in lower price brackets. The rear visual appearance is quite a polarising approach from the predecessor, however the design changes are appreciable.

Display

The display on the smartphone is a 6.78 Inch, 1200p resolution, 120Hz OLED panel. It boasts LTPO 4.1 technology, which ensures the battery life is not compromised. The HBM brightness is 1600 nits and the peak brightness is 4500 nits similar to the previous model. It features DCI P3 Color Gamut for better visuals. It is a completely flat (not micro-quad-curve) panel, instead of a dual-curve on 12R.

Processor

The 2024’s flagship processor (4nm-based Snapdragon 8 Gen 3) powers the OnePlus 13R. The base RAM and storage combination is 12GB + 256GB (UFS 4.0). The upgrades over the OnePlus 12R are the use of the base variant as 12GB and UFS 4.0 instead of UFS 3.1. The phone features a 9925mm² Vapour Cooling Chamber, which is 8% larger. Overall, the performance is quite promising for the price it offers.

OnePlus 13R

Cameras

The most awaited change is the addition of a telephoto sensor in the OnePlus 13R. The rear includes 50MP (LYT 700 with OIS) + 8MP (FOV: 112°) + 50MP (JN5 with 2x optical zoom) setup. It can provide 4K 60 fps videos from the primary sensor, however, the selfie sensor (16MP) is kept at the standard 1080 30 fps. It’s worth mentioning that the Chinese Ace 5V brings a 50MP + 8MP + 2MP rear set-up, while they tweaked it for the Indian variant, which is quite appreciable.

Battery

Another big leap from the OnePlus 12R is the addition of 6000 mAh tech (next-generation battery technology for battery life improvement). The phone comes with an 80W (downgraded from 100W) SuperVooc charger in the box, which is a nice combination. However, the phone uses a single-cell battery instead of the dual-cell found on the 12R.

OnePlus 13R

Software

The OnePlus 13R features Android 15-based OxygenOS 15 out-of-the-box. On top of that, the company is assuring to provide 4 years of OS upgrades and 6 years of security patches. The software comes with several AI features which have recently become a trend and arguably a nice marketing tool.

In addition to it, the OnePlus partnership with Jio results in support for 5.5G* technology in India. Also, it is worth mentioning that it is one of the few phones that supports 120fps on BGMI. In context with gaming, it also features an adaptive frame booster for higher resolution with good stable fps.

Price

The phone demands a starting price of ₹42,999 for 12GB + 256GB and ₹49,999 for 16GB + 512GB. The company is offering a ₹3,000 instant bank discount, effectively reducing the price to ₹39,999 and ₹46,999 respectively. There are other attractive offers, such as 180 days of free phone replacement, complimentary airport lounge service, and a lifetime warranty if the Green Line appears.

According to us, the overall price-to-performance ratio is fantastic, considering the available competition at this price. It starts at ₹40,000 for 12/256GB, 8 Gen 3, 120Hz 1.5K AMOLED Display, and a telephoto sensor. All of the above factors make it truly a flagship killer, reviving the older OnePlus memories.
