Performance

Speaking about the performance of the chip, AMD has changed the 3D cache technology to the 2nd generation, which keeps the CPU die on top and the 3D cache technology on the lower side of the CPU, which keeps the core complex die CCD close to the cooling solution, which helps the CPU be cool with which it can deliver high clock speeds, and the change of the placement of the 3D cache technology allows for the huge overclocking potential for the chip. This chipset is the first chipset from the X3D series to support overclocking, enabling enthusiasts and gamers to unlock the full potential of the chip.

AMD 9800X3D

The AMD 9800X3D ranges from 4.7 GHz base clocks to 5.2 GHz boost clocks running at a moderate TDP of 120 watts, ensuring the best performance without consuming too much power like the higher-end CPUs. A huge 104 MB of cache ensures it performs well when needed.

The CPU has also got an unlocked multiplier for overclocking, which is a first for V cache CPUs since 2022; it’s the fastest X3D CPU when it comes to base clocks. The base clocks got a solid 500 MHz uplift over the prior generation 7800X3D. The boost clocks are 200 MHz higher now, making it a 5.2 GHz boost clock.

The AMD 9800X3D is built on the Zen 5 architecture, which is based on the more improved TSMC 4nm node, which is a bit more efficient than the TSMC 5nm node, which the 7800X3D Just the node improvement gives the 9800X3D 11% more performance and 22% less power throughout the CPU, which is good. Thanks to the new Zen 5 architecture.

The AMD 9800X3D has an increase in L1 cache, from 512 kb to 650 kb cache on the CPU, and more RAM speeds without overclocking the RAM kit with expo like 5600mhz on default vs. 5200mhz, and more memory support up from 128 GB of maximum ram capacity to 192 GB of ram capacity for those who require the additional memory.

Gaming Performance

Combined with the advanced Zen 5 architecture and 3D vcache, the AMD 9800X3D gets an average of 8% gen-to-gen uplift vs. the previous generation 7800X3D and, on average, 20% faster than the competition. 285K in gaming, and many games such as Star Wars Outlaws will provide the CPU with double-digit gains in gaming performance gen-on-gen,

The AMD 9800X3D can provide substantially good improvements in minimum frame rates even when the average frame rates are similar. Hence, the experience feels smoother. For example, in the Last Of Us Part 1 game, the 9800X3D has a similar average frame rate but a big 31% higher 1% min frame rate compared to the competition’s 14900K CPU. This makes it the AMD 9800X3D go-to option for hardcore gamers who want the best performance while not spending much on a higher-end CPU.

Pricing and Availablity

The 9800X3D starts at 479 dollars, which is a 30$ jump from the previous generation’s 450$ starting price. The sale for the CPU starts on November 7th, 2024, and the Indian pricing is around 48,220 INR for Indian users. The price increase for the CPUs is decent enough considering you are getting good gaming performance from the CPU.

AMD 9800X3D

Verdict

The AMD 9800X3D is back again with the 2nd generation 3D cache and support for overclocking the CPU for hardcore enthusiasts who would love to overclock the CPUs to the extreme for more performance. The AMD 9800X3D once again is the fastest gaming CPU because of the good L3 cache it brings with it. The new 2nd generation V cache is good; you can overclock or undervolt your CPU for better gaming performance on games now, and thanks to the cache die being placed down, the cooling would be good too for the CPU.
