15 Pro vs 16 Pro

Design and display

The iPhone 16 Pro features internal design improvements including a 100% recycled aluminium thermal substructure and back glass optimisations that further dissipate heat, enabling up to 20% better sustained performance than the iPhone 15 Pro. It also rocks a Grade 5 titanium design with a new, refined micro-blasted finish. Apple has also claimed its latest-generation Ceramic Shield material that’s two times tougher than any smartphone glass. The display is also larger, measuring 6.3″, compared to the 15 Pro’s 6.1″. The iPhone 16 Pro also has the thinnest border on any Apple product.

Performance

The new iPhone 16 Pro is powered by the A18 Pro, which also enables Apple Intelligence with a faster Neural Engine, an improved CPU and GPU, and a big jump in memory bandwidth. It also drives advanced video and photo features like Camera Control, and it delivers the best-ever graphics performance for AA gaming.

The A18 Pro is 15% faster than the A17 Pro while consuming 20% less power. This is achieved through a refined architecture built on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process (N3E), compared to the first-generation 3nm process (N3B) used in the A17 Pro. Compared to its predecessor, the A18 Pro’s GPU is 20% faster and has 2x ray tracing, which will make games look more lifelike, with more fluid graphics and realistic lighting. It also features Wi-Fi 7, a jump from the A17 Pro’s Wi-Fi 6E.

Cameras

The most noticeable change in the 16 Pro is the addition of a new button on the right side of the iPhone, beneath the power button—Camera Control. It is a button that can be used to do various functions within the camera app.

A single click of the button will launch the camera app. A single click inside the camera app will take a photo. Clicking and holding the button will start the video recording. Besides that, it can be used to change settings. A light press will open controls, like Zoom. With a double light press, another setting can be selected, and sliding through the button will adjust it. Later this year, during fall, a double-stage shutter will be introduced to camera control, which will allow automatically locking focus and exposure, so that shots can be reframed without losing focus on the subject.

Speaking about cameras, the iPhone 16 Pro will allow video recording in a whopping 4K 120fps with Dolby Vision, whereas the iPhone 15 caps out at 4K 60fps. This is powered by the A18 Pro chip and the 16 Pro’s new 48MP Fusion camera, fusion in the sense that it will essentially add a telephoto lens, resulting in two optical-quality cameras in one. The Fusion lens will allow 2x telephoto at 48 mm. However, Apple’s website claims that using the 2x telephoto capabilities from the Fusion camera will result in the resolution being reduced to 12MP.

The iPhone 16 Pro will also feature a 48MP ultra-wide camera with a more advanced quad-pixel sensor for super-high-resolution 48MP ProRAW and HEIF photos with autofocus. It is a massive jump from the 15 Pro’s 12MP ultra-wide camera. This will allow macro images with much higher quality.

The 16 Pro will also feature a new generation of Photographic Styles, which will allow dialling in desired looks, with more advanced skin-tone rendering. These styles will be reversible and will be able to be applied over multiple images. With the A18 Pro, applied styles can be seen in a live preview, like professional colour grading in real-time.

It will also feature a new colour pad, which makes it easy to adjust tone and colour simultaneously. The provided slider can be used to adjust the intensity of the specific colours.

Audio

The iPhone 16 Pro will have a big leap in audio performance, as it will feature four studio-quality mics for higher-quality recording. When compared to the iPhone 15 Pro which has two mics, there will be significant improvement. This will be assured by a new feature called Audio Mix, which will give the ability to adjust the way in which voices sound in videos. Powered by advanced intelligence and Spatial Audio capture, it will provide an array of options using AI that will allow fine-tuning of audio to make it perfect.

There are three different voice options, the in-frame voice option only captures the voice of the people in the frame and completely ignores the sound of people talking off-camera. The studio option makes it sound like the recording is being done in a studio because it would make it sound as if the mic was close to the subject’s mouth, even if it was actually a few metres away. The cinematic mode captures all the voices around the phone and consolidates them towards the front of the screen. This feature doesn’t exist on the 15 Pro.

The iPhone 16 Pro also allows Spatial Audio Capture, which makes sound more immersive while listening with AirPods. With wind-noise reduction, the audio quality would be even clearer.

Battery

Apple has opted for an optimised internal design, which fits larger batteries, which work together with the A18 Pro chip to deliver power-efficient performance. Apple has claimed up to 27 hours of video playback on the 16 Pro, up to 4 more hours of battery playback, compared to 23 hours on the iPhone 15 Pro.

Apple also claims 85 hours of audio playback, 10 hours more than the 15 Pro’s 75 hours. So, the iPhone 16 Pro offers a 17% increase in video playback time compared to the iPhone 15 Pro, thanks to a larger battery and improved power management. The new MagSafe chargers allow up to 25W with a 30W power adapter or higher, enabling up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes.

Colours

This time, the iPhone 16 Pro comes in a new colour: Desert Titanium, which looks absolutely stunning. But the 16 Pro no longer features a Blue Titanium, available with the iPhone 15 Pro.

Conclusion

Overall, the 16 Pro has some improvements over its predecessor, but the most significant improvement is the addition of a new button, 48MP ultrawide cameras, a 48MP Fusion main camera enabling 4K 120fps video recording, better mics, better battery, bigger display and powering it all, the A18 Pro.

15 pro Max vs 16 pro max

Most of the things mentioned in the 15 Pro vs 16 Pro comparison also apply to the 15 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max. So, only the differences exclusive to both the Pro Maxes would be covered.

Design and Display

iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9″ Super Retina XDR display, a significant leap from the 6.7″ display on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This makes the iPhone 16 Pro Max the largest iPhone ever, with a 174.06mm diagonal display. The iPhone 16 Pro Max display has a new micro-blasted titanium finish for a more refined look. The iPhone 16 Pro Max has thinner borders around the display compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, with the screen border reduced from 1.55mm to just 1.15mm

Cameras

This year, both the 16 Pro and Pro Max have the same cameras. Although both feature a 48MP main camera, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is equipped with an upgraded sensor, which performs better in low-light conditions and has faster autofocus. The 16 Pro Max retains the 5x optical zoom telephoto lens from the 15 Pro Max but adds better software enhancements for clearer, more detailed zoomed shots. The big difference is that the 16 Pro Max has a 48MP ultrawide, a big upgrade from the 12MP on the 15 Pro Max.

Battery

The 16 Pro Max features a 4,767 mAh battery, about 5.7% bigger than the 15 Pro Max’s 4,441 mAh. The 16 Pro Max offers up to 33 hours of video playback on a single charge, a 4-hour improvement over the 29 hours on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. For audio playback, Apple claims the iPhone 16 Pro Max to last up to 105 hours, compared to 95 hours on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, a 10-hour boost.

Conclusion

Overall, the iPhone 16 Pro Max also provides some improvements over the 15 Pro Max, with the main changes being similar to its younger brother, the 16 Pro, but exclusive to the 16 Pro Max would be a larger display and a bigger battery.
