WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps with a large user base. The app keeps improving with new features, UI, and other upgrades over time. Some WhatsApp features are useful for the masses, and some are for a specific type of user, depending on your usage. In this article, we will tell you about some of the new and upcoming features and changes in the new versions of WhatsApp.

Chat Themes

Earlier, we were able to change the background of our chats with different images, colours, and wallpapers. But now we can set different chat themes, including the Chat colour and Wallpaper, with many different themes, and you can use your favourite.

Here is how it will look, and available options.

If you’re using WhatsApp’s Beta version, you might have received this feature, but if you are using the normal stable version, it will be added with future updates.

Here is how to find and use Chat Themes:

Step 1: Open WhatsApp, and click on the three-dots icon at the top right corner.

Step 2: Open Settings.

Step 3: Select the Chats option.

Step 4: Under the Display category, select Default Chat Theme. If this feature is available, then you will find it there, otherwise, you’ll have to wait for some time.

There are a lot of themes, containing both the Chat colour and wallpaper combinations or you can customise the Chat colour and wallpaper separately with the Customise option.

New Typing… Indicator

For a long time, if the opposite person is typing then it shows it as Typing… but it will be changed in the new versions of WhatsApp. Here is how it’ll look like now:

Lists

Sometimes the main chat list looks cluttered because all the important chats are mixed up with the other chats as they are on the same list. To solve the problem, WhatsApp added a Favourites list where you can filter the important, and chats close one’s chats out of the main cluttered list.

So, even this did not resolve the issue completely, so here comes one of the best solutions to this problem.

This feature makes it easier for users to organise the chats by allowing them to create lists for specific contacts. You can now easily add a new list, name it, add contacts there and separate everything. Like friends, family and work chats.

Here is how to do this, if it’s available on your WhatsApp, or you will have to wait for the upcoming versions.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp and click on the three-dots icon.

Step 2: Open settings.

Step 3: Select the Lists option.

Step 4: Select New List, name the list, add at least one contact to the list and click on Create List.

On the lists page, you will find all the lists. Three of them, Unread, Favourites, and Groups, were already added. Click on the list name to view added contacts. To add or remove contacts, click on the Pencil icon in the list and proceed.

To delete or change the position of a list, click on the Pencil icon on the Lists page. To change the number in multiple lists, Hold the = icon and swipe up or down as needed. You can switch between different lists on WhatsApp’s homepage/chats page.

Badge Count for Lists

This feature isn’t out yet but will be coming in future updates. Currently, we cannot see how many unread messages are there in a list at a glance. But as per WABetaInfo, the future versions will include a badge Count that will display a small number within the list name, indicating how many unread messages are there in a specific list. This is useful as users can identify which lists have more unread messages, and prioritise the lists that actually need more attention. This feature is still under development and will be available in future updates.
