Realme is launching the realme 12x 5G in India on 2nd April 2024, and it is shaping up to be an amazing contender in the budget 5G smartphone segment in India.
It is meant to be the direct successor to the super-popular realme 11x 5G from last year, and is mostly a minor upgrade over its predecessor, with one potential downgrade.
Fortunately, we already know what to expect from the phone, so here’s everything you need to know!
(Disclosure: I’ve taken help from a comparison chart made by realme India to promote the realme 12x 5G which as it turned out had some misleading specs as I researched deeper into the phones, in the camera and battery sections. I’ll leave my Twitter post correcting the misleading parts here, and I have taken care to reflect the real specifications of the phone to the best of my knowledge as of the time of writing)
STOP MISLEADING PEOPLE.
❌ 4880 mAh is the MINIMUM typical capacity of the 11x's battery BUT it is being compared to the MAXIMUM rated capacity of realme 12x's battery.

(Almost) the same LCD display
The realme 12x 5G is expected to carry the same 6.72-inch LCD display as its predecessor. It will have a 120 Hz refresh rate and a resolution of FHD+ (2400x1080p).
The major change happens to be in the brightness, which will be bumped up to as high as 950 nits (from the 680 nits of its predecessor.)
Moreover, it will get the Rainwater smart touch feature allowing easy use of the phone’s display in the rain, although its effectiveness could be hampered by a screen protector.
Design & Build
The phone will get a brand new design to blend in with the rest of the realme 12 series, with a ribbon pattern running through the middle of the rear panel and the now-recognisable circular camera module.
It is also expected to be the thinnest phone in its segment at 7.69 mm, thinner than the 7.9mm of its predecessor.
It will also be IP54 rated, a slight upgrade over the 11x 5G.
The build is expected to be entirely plastic, both the rear panel and the frame included.
Same battery, faster charging
The Chinese variant of the realme 12x 5G has 15W charging, but it is confirmed that the Indian variant will get upgraded 45W charging, and such fast charging speeds are rarely seen in the sub-INR 15k segment.
It is also an upgrade over the 33W charging of the realme 11x.
Both phones also share the same rated battery capacity of 5000 mAh.
(PS: Don’t be fooled by one of realme’s teasers claiming the 11x has a 4880 mAh battery, it’s just a marketing tactic to make 12x look better. They’re comparing minimum 4880 mAH capacity of 11x’s battery against the maximum rated capacity of 5000 mAh of 12x’s battery. A look at the 11x’s specs on realme’s Indian website clears the misleading marketing and confirms that it too has the same 5000 mAh rated capacity as the 12x.)
Software
The realme 12x runs realme UI 5.0 based on Android 14. Expect the phone to receive 2 major OS updates (Android 15 and 16) and 3 years of security patches (until 2027).
One thing worth mentioning is that realme is bringing the Air Gesture feature from the recently announced Narzo 70 Pro to the realme 12x 5G.
It will also get the Dynamic Button functionality from the realme 12 5G, which is essentially a ripoff of the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button, but executed with the power button of the phone, which also incorporates the fingerprint scanner.
The highlight of realme UI 5.0, Magic Capsule 2.0, may also be present on the phone.
As is with realme UI, expect to see bloatware and a lot of ads, which isn’t unexpected for a budget phone anyways.
Audio
The realme 12x 5G keeps the dying 3.5 mm headphone jack alive, and it receives an unexpected upgrade from the realme 11x 5G: Dual Stereo Speakers.
Chipset & Performance
Realme 12x will be powered by the same MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ chipset as its predecessor. It is a budget 5G chipset fabbed on TSMC’s 6 nm fabrication process.
However, it will have a new Vapor Chamber (VC) cooling system, which is upgraded from the realme 11x 5G.
It is expected to have two variants: 6/128 and 8/128, with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage which is standard for the price.
Sadly there are less chances of a 256 GB storage variant, so potential buyers who need more storage might have to look elsewhere.
Cameras
This is the major concern with the realme 12x 5G.
Realme India claims in a teaser that the cameras are an upgrade from the 11x because “50 MP AI”, but no, the sensor is a downgrade from the 11x 5G.
I expect it to be a ISOCELL JN1, a 50 MP, 1/2.76″ sensor, and a downgrade over the 64 MP, 1/2″ sensor of its predecessor.
The front camera is expected to have the same 8 MP sensor as its predecessor.
Pricing of realme 12x 5g
Leaks have hinted at a price of below INR 15k for the 8/128 variant and realme India’s own teasers are touting a starting price of under INR 12k.
Now, I’m sure the sub-INR 12k price is for the 6/128 variant, but even then, this is shaping up to be an amazing deal for the price.
Major alternatives arise in the form of the Redmi 12 5G/POCO M6 Pro 5G and the Motorola g34 5G, and the realme is poised to be a major threat to both the brands.
