Why and how fast charging might be one of the most revolutionary smartphone features at present and even in the future? In this article, we have discussed it in detail so read it till the end and get to know the problems, solutions, and future of this smartphone tech—fast charging!
The Problem
Power anxiety is a modern problem. It is when you’re anxious about whether your phone’s juice will last while you run that important errand. Today, when we leave our homes, we are confident to go out because of the tool we wield—our smartphone. It can hail us a cab, pay, make calls, take pictures, play songs, and virtually anything you can imagine. But all of this isn’t permanent, we need to charge it everyday. But if we ever unfortunately forget to charge it, especially when we have to leave the house in thirty minutes, we may very well not go outside.
The Solution
But that changes. Around 2019, various smartphone brands debuted fast charging, which allowed 50% charge in just thirty minutes. This was a considerable breakthrough in battery technology, because prior to that, phones typically needed charging for at least 1-2 hours to reach 50%, and more than 2 hours to become fully charged. Fast charging quickly became a successful phenomenon, as more and more companies started implementing them.

Early birds to adopt this technology included brands like Qualcomm, who used Quick Charge 3.0 technology, OPPO who used VOOC (Voltage Open Loop Multi-step Constant-Current Charging) technology, OnePlus who used Dash Charge and Google who used USB Power Delivery. These brands, around 2015 and 2016, managed to implement their methods of fast charging which allowed their smartphones to be charged to 50% in roughly 30 minutes.
This time has only kept on decreasing. By 2019, OPPO with SUPERVOOC, Xiaomi, realme, and OnePlus achieved 50% in 15 minutes. If that was impressive, then by 2022, Xiaomi, OPPO, realme, iQOO, and vivo hit the milestone of 50% in just 5 minutes! That’s about the time it takes for you to brush your teeth and have your morning coffee. It is incredible how quick fast charging has become.
Right now, brands like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Huawei, and realme guarantee full charge in nearly 30 minutes in their respective flagship devices. When we contrast this with the charging speed of early flagships, this is mind-blowing. We went from smartphones taking hours to fully charge, to them having finished charging by the time we finish our morning routine. Now not only do phones charge quickly, but they also retain this battery. With a single full charge, smartphones these days can last as long as two days without being juiced.

The Future
The future holds a lot for battery tech. Brands like Xiaomi, realme, and OPPO are testing 200W-240W chargers that can completely charge phones in 10 minutes. This might even reach 300W, which would significantly reduce the time spent charging. This can be a reality in the near future. Like wired charging, brands will also focus on making wireless charging quicker. Not only is the future concerned with the wattage, but it also concerns the type of battery used, its durability, safety, heat management, and eco-friendliness.

Reviving Innovation
In the tech world where innovation is almost dead, faster battery charging speed is going to be the new innovation. It will break the ice in our time where almost everything that people have imagined has been implemented into smartphones, resulting in brands trying to stimulate innovation, which most of the time end up as gimmicks, which are termed as revolutionary additions. The truth is, that innovation may not be dead. As long as companies try to keep on upgrading the power of batteries to the point that they are so efficient, it is in fact innovation.
Conclusion—Why Is It Revolutionary?
Res ipsa loquitur—the thing speaks for itself. Having the ability to charge your phone completely in under half an hour is paramount. It comes in great help especially when you’re in a rush, and you want to have your phone charged so that you can out with peace of mind. Fast charging allows that. I have had fast charging come in handy many times in my daily life. It is revolutionary in the sense that it lets you have a fully charged device ready to use within not hours, but minutes.
