A major AWS outage is affecting several Middle East countries due to ongoing strikes from Iran, as Iran is striking U.S. bases in the Middle East. These reported drone strikes targeting data centers led to outages in the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar. Middle Eastern countries are experiencing service disruptions and network latency throughout government websites and even on some social media platforms.

According to the reports, two data centres in the UAE and one in Bahrain were affected by drone strikes on March 1st. UAE’s third data center is partially operational but has effects. There was fire and structural damage reported, so restoring it might take time.
There have been several disrupted services throughout the Middle East, and has caused latencies. This includes Video streaming services like YouTube, Banking Apps (Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, QNB’s Mobile banking had some delays, but there were no major outages caused on QNB as it relies more on Microsoft Azure).
AI Platforms like ChatGPT were most affected as it’s taking more time to load chats, send requests, and upload media in the Middle East.
Iran’s drone strikes on AWS Data centers were done in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran. They may have attacked AWS as it influences American commercial interests. AWS also plays a part in hosting U.S. government and military-related workloads, so this strike might have allowed it to disrupt U.S. tech dominance. There have not been any Iranian statements with AWS mentioned, yet.
