Samsung Galaxy S24 FE: The New Affordable Flagship or Simply Disappointing?

Samsung has recently announced the Galaxy S24 FE in India, and it comes as the successor to the Galaxy S23 FE from last year, distilling many of the flagship features from the Galaxy S24 series to a more affordable price point.

Design & Build

The Galaxy S24 FE carries the signature Samsung design which we have seen from the company for a while now.

A flat aluminum frame with three vertical camera rings arranged in the corner alongside the flash, it looks distinctly like many other phones we’ve been seeing from the company for a while now.

The phone has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, while the front and rear back panels are covered by Gorilla Glass Victus+. The phone also has four colors: Graphite, Mint, Yellow, and Blue.

Overall, the phone sticks to the tried and tested Samsung design and build quality, which will appeal to most people, but is starting to feel very stale.

Display

The Galaxy S24 FE has a larger display than the S23 FE, now measuring at 6.7 inches, with a resolution of 2340 × 1080p and a pixel density of 395 ppi.

It is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus+ and has slimmer bezels than its predecessor This is a Dynamic 2X AMOLED panel that supports HDR10+ playback, and a peak brightness of 1900 nits, with a 120 Hz resolution.

Performance

This is the big upgrade on the Galaxy S24 FE. Unlike the Exynos 2200/Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 combination that was seen on the S23 FE, the new phone goes two generations ahead with the Exynos 2400e chipset.

Yes, this is almost the same Exynos 2400 chipset as the Galaxy S24 & S24+, with the only difference being that the Prime Cortex-X4 core is downclocked on the S24 FE (from 3.2 GHz to 3.1 GHz). The XClipse 940 GPU co-developed with AMD is also retained.

Another difference is that the S24 FE only comes in a single Exynos variant: there is no Snapdragon variant of the phone this year.

There are other upgrades too: the phone comes with 8 GB of RAM, but the storage type has now been upgraded to UFS 4.0 (from UFS 3.1 of its predecessor). However, this change only applies to the 256 GB and 512 GB storage options, since the 128 GB variant of the S24 FE ships with UFS 3.1.

Samsung has also upgraded the cooling system on the Galaxy S24 FE, which will ensure better thermal management and efficiency.

Cameras

The Galaxy S24 FE comes with the same rear camera setup as the Galaxy S23 FE from last year, while the selfie camera has been changed.

  • The main rear camera comes in at 50 megapixels, with a 1/1.57″ sensor, mated to a 24 mm f/1.8 lens and OIS.
  • The Ultrawide camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels, with a 1/3.0″ sensor, paired to a 13 mm f/2.2 lens, and it has a 123° field-of-view.
  • The telephoto camera has an 8-megapixel resolution, with a 1/4.4″ sensor paired with a 75 mm f/2.4 lens, having 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. OIS is also onboard.
  • The selfie camera is now a 10-megapixel sensor with a 26 mm lens and f/2.4 aperture.

The phone supports video recording at up to 8K 30 fps from the rear camera, and 4K 60 fps from the selfie camera. EIS is also available onboard for stable footage while shooting videos.

Battery & Charging

The phone has a 4700 mAh battery, which supports 25-watt wired charging and 15-watt Qi wireless charging.

It also supports 4.5 watts of reverse wireless charging to charge your smartwatch or TWS earbuds in urgent situations (if they support wireless charging).

The Type-C port on the phone is enabled for USB 3.2 speeds for faster-wired data transfers.

I really wish Samsung upgraded the charging speeds of its phones, it is really starting to feel very slow.

Software

The phone boots on One UI 6.1 based on Android 14, with a promise of 7 major OS updates and 7 years of security patches, the same as the rest of the Galaxy S24 series.

The software also has all of the Galaxy AI features that have debuted to date, including Circle To Search, Live Translate, Instant Slow-Mo, AI Summarize, Generative photo editor, auto transcripts in the default Samsung Recorder app, Grammar check in Samsung Notes, and so on.

The One UI 7.0 development has been delayed and will arrive on the Galaxy S24 FE sometime early in 2025.

Audio

The phone has dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. It supports the Samsung Seamless Codec (SSC) to enable high nitrate audio playback using Samsung’s audio products. However, there is no headphone jack, which has become a norm in the industry now.

Pricing in India

The Galaxy S24 FE is available in two variants in India, which are priced as follows.

  • 8 GB RAM, 128 GB UFS 3.1 storage: ₹59,999
  • 8 GB RAM, 256 GB UFS 4.0 storage: ₹65,999

Currently on the Samsung India website, only the 256 GB variant is available, with an HDFC Card discount of ₹6000 available.

Just get the Galaxy S24!

However, with the Galaxy S24 available for similar prices on Amazon and Flipkart, complete with much more premium hardware, I feel that this is a very redundant launch.

I mean, what does the S24 FE do better than the S24? Is it just the battery life? I feel this phone needs a very substantial price drop before it can be recommended to everyone.

With the Galaxy S24, you get a better display (the S24 FE’s display lacks LTPO technology, while the S24 has it), a more premium build (thanks to Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection), a better-refined set of cameras (including the 10 MP 3x telephoto lens) and much more.

And the S24 can be had for as low as ₹55K.

Choose wisely, people!
