Android 15 is Released to AOSP by Google
Yesterday, Google released Android 15 to AOSP and announced the same in a blog post.
Quoting from the blog post:
Today we’re releasing Android 15 and making the source code available at the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Android 15 will be available on supported Pixel devices in the coming weeks, as well as on select devices from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi in the coming months.
Matthew McCullough – VP of Product Management, Android Developer
Typically, new Pixel devices come with the latest Android version. However, this year, Google released the Pixel 9 series earlier than usual, and they came with the previous year’s OS. If you’ve been eagerly anticipating the Android 15 update, you’ll be pleased to know that Google has just uploaded its source code to AOSP. This means you might be able to try it out using a custom ROM in the next few days.
Last week, we heard about Google’s plans to release the Android 15 source code to AOSP. As expected, the company has now officially announced that the source code is available at the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Google also mentioned that the stable Android 15 update for Pixel devices will be rolling out in the next few weeks. However, earlier reports suggest it might not arrive until mid-October. Since Google hasn’t provided a specific release timeline, it’s best not to expect the update on your Pixel device anytime soon.
For custom ROM enthusiasts, the wait won’t be long. Independent developers usually release custom ROMs based on the latest Android version a few days after Google uploads the source code to AOSP. This means those with development-friendly devices can try Android 15 before Google officially rolls it out for Pixel devices. The source code will also enable companies outside Google’s Android Partners program to create modified versions of Android 15 for their devices.
Additionally, Google has launched a new educational series called Spotlight Weeks. This series will cover technical topics across Android, starting with a week focused on Android 15. Developers interested in the series can visit the Android 15 Spotlight Week page for an overview of the topics covered this week.
This ends the daily tech round up and see you next time. Till then, stay tuned.
