Apple has introduced the new Mac Mini with the new generation Apple M4 and M4 Pro chipsets, finally ending the base RAM configuration of just 8GB and introducing a respectable 16 GB RAM even on the base variant, which is a good change from Apple.

Design

Apple said that they have lowered the size of the Mac mini to 5×5 inches, which reduces the overall footprint of the Mac mini compared to its previous generation. This design is enabled by the power efficiency of the Apple silicon and innovative thermal architecture, and the Mac Mini is produced using an impact extrude process, which lowers the usage of aluminium by 85%.

Performance

The Mac Mini jumps straight from the M2 chip to the Apple M4 chipset, which is a big boost in performance. According to Apple, the new Mac Mini is around 1.6x faster than the previous generation M2 Mac mini in affinity photo CPU performance, the new 10-core GPU gives the mini hardware accelerated mesh shading with ray tracing for the first time on the Mac Mini, and this means the new Mac Mini is 1.4x faster than the previous generation Mac Mini in World of Warcraft and has a 3x faster neural engine than the M1-based Mac Mini in video editing. Apple says the Mac Mini is 13x faster than the Intel Mac Mini, which is a big lead.

The M4 Pro features the fastest CPU core, according to Apple. It features 14 CPU cores consisting of 10 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, and the new 20-core GPU is twice as powerful as the GPU found in the M4 CPU. The M4 Pro also gets a massive increase in memory bandwidth, which is a whopping 75% increase in memory bandwidth vs. the previous generation M3 Pro, and the CPU performance is 1.6x faster than the M2 Pro and 2.1x faster than the Core Ultra Series 2 258V CPU.

the GPU is 1.5x faster than the M2 pro and a whopping 2.4x faster than the GPU, which was found in the Intel Core Ultra Series 2 258V CPU, and games like Control with raytracing on look way better, and the neural engine of the M4 pro is 3x faster than the one found on the M1 pro CPU, and when we combine that with the 75% memory bandwidth, Apple says it will run Apple intelligence language models a lot smoother.

Ports and Connectivity

The Mac Mini features 3X Thunderbolt ports and an HDMI 2.1 port, a gigabit Ethernet port with optional 10-gigabit Ethernet, 2 USB 4 ports, and 3.5mm on the front side, making access to the ports easier. For the M4, you get Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M4 Pro supports the latest Thunderbolt 5, which offers transfer speeds up to 120 GB/s. The M4 includes a DisplayPort 1.4, while the M4 Pro features a DisplayPort 2.1 over the Type C port, and the USB ports are ditched in favour of the USB C ports in the new Mac.

Pricing and Availablity

The preorders for the new Mac Mini will start on October 29th, and the product’s shipping should begin on November 8th.

The models come with 16/24 GB of RAM and can be upgraded to 32 GB of RAM on the M4 and 64 GB on the M4 Pro. The storage options start with 256 GB as the base and go up to 2 TB on the M4 and 8 TB on the M4 Pro.
