Apple has just launched four new models under the iPhone 16 series namely the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. All the models are a significant upgrade over the last generation of iPhones that went by the same words after the number. In this article, we will talk about the iPhone 16, its specifications, the pricing, and changes over the iPhone 15.
Let’s talk about iPhone 16
iPhone 16 now features a vertical camera layout after Apple kept a diagonal one for 3 generations all the way from iPhone 13 to the iPhone 15. The flash module is now placed on the side of the camera module, and the mic hole is on the module itself.
The vertical module is now here to enable Spatial Video recording for Apple Vision Pro-supported content.
The new colors for the iPhone 16 series are
Ultramarine (Blue)
Teal (Green)
Pink (well, the name itself is enough)
White (Do I need to say it again?)
And Black (Ahem…)
Apple went with quite muted colors that looked off-white last year. They have changed it this time with more saturated colors and have kept the matte finish as last year, which helps with fingerprint resistance.
One good thing about the design is that now every iPhone, including the base iPhone 16 we are covering is blessed with the Action button, which gives you more options for what can be done with one button.
Speaking of buttons, one new button has been introduced in every single model this time called the Camera Control Button. It basically allows you to open the camera app and then navigate through the different features like photographic styles inside the camera app by sliding over the button. The button is capacitive instead of being an actual physical button and the physical feedback that the button gives off is generated by Apple’s Taptic engine inside the phone.
The chipset is now again ack to the latest generation with the A18 sitting inside the phone. The Pro Models will get the A18 Pro with slightly improved peak and sustained performance. The sustained performance is also made better with the help of a new graphene cooling layer inside, which should absorb the heat by a huge margin, leaving the processor some headroom to perform without the fear of overheating.
The screen size figure has been retained to 6.1-inches, unlike the Pro which has a screen size of 6.3-inch.
They have not given a specific number yet, but their words were “big boost in battery life” so we can assume some upgrades have been made to the battery life as well.
As for the build quality, it’s still two sheets of glass on the front and the back with aluminum sandwiched in between. Apple calls the glass Ceramic Shield, which should help it resist some more scratches and drops.
Now speaking about the two biggest features according to Apple in the newer base iPhone models are the Cameras and Apple Intelligence. So, let’s jump right into it before talking about the cons, shall we?
The wide-angle camera now has Auto Focus, which also acts as a macro camera, helping you to take close-up shots.
And even though Apple likes to say that they “technically added” a telephoto camera, it’s just their main camera zooming in half of the resolution to enable lossless zoom. Which helps somewhat but still not as well as a dedicated telephoto camera.
The phone comes built for Apple Intelligence, with a lot of nice-to-have features, coming later this year.
Apple Intelligence also helps Siri finally become a better assistant.
Also, the phone will come out of the box with iOS 18.
Now for the cons, even after so much backlash from the tech community and creators, the iPhone 16 comes with a 60Hz display, which shouldn’t be a dealbreaker to most people as Apple thinks, but in our opinion, it’s about time we move on from slow refresh rate displays and make 90Hz the new baseline because even the phones that retail for under 200 USD come with a 120Hz display nowadays.
Another issue is that the iPhone 16 still starts with 128GB for the price it asks for. A Xiaomi 14, which retails for 10,000 INR less than this offers you half a terabyte.
The price that you can get your own iPhone 16 for, is Rs 79,999, which is the same pricing as last year.
