Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC ) will begin on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 10:30 PM IST (10:00 AM PT). There are going to be several exciting announcements related to Apple’s AI features and other software upgrades with iOS 18. If you’re interested in what’s coming up, worry not, we’ve got you covered. Here’s what we can expect during the event.

Apple is going to introduce its own AI in partnership with OpenAI. It will be called Apple Intelligence, instead of Artificial Intelligence. The main focus of the event will be on Apple’s AI itself, and interestingly the implementation of AI will be in a different and better way, which we will discuss in the article further. Along with most focus on AI, Apple will also focus on the improved customizations and new features of iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and Apple Watch.

So firstly we will discuss the expected AI features and then we’ll discuss the other expected Software Upgrades.

AI Features

As we mentioned earlier, Apple will be introducing its own AI in partnership with OpenAI, with better implementation throughout the device and apps to ease the users’ daily lives. Rather than showing more interest in AI technology like generating images and videos, the company concentrated more on a broader perspective.

It is expected that users will have the freedom to opt in or opt out of the AI features. Apple won’t force them to adopt them if they don’t want to. Most AI features will work in devices and their apps so, the AI technology will run on the chipset of the device, instead of cloud unlike Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot. This will ensure extra safety of the data and privacy. However, it is also possible that Apple may use a combination of the device Chipset and Cloud server, depending on the AI task being performed.

So, to use the AI features, there are hardware requirements, the users may need at least a 15 Pro or the new models coming this year. If you’re using an iPad or a MacBook then they’ll need a model with an M1 chip at least.

Now let’s have a look at the AI features-

Generate a Summary of Long Texts

Apple is planning to make its AI capable of summarization. It is going to introduce features that can quickly recap the articles and web pages in the Safari browser. Similarly, it will also be able to sum up text messages, emails and meeting notes easily.

Reply Suggestions

With the help of this feature, instead of manually typing a reply to a message and email, the iPhone will be able to automatically create a proper response to an email and text message on behalf of the user. Also, Apple is planning to introduce a feature for missed notifications, it will allow users to know what they missed while they were not looking at their phones.

Advancing Siri with AI

Apple is planning to revamp Siri with its new AI. This time Siri will have more advanced and better control over the individual features and actions within the apps. For example, users will be able to tell Siri to delete an email, summarise a news article, to edit a photo and much more.

An Upgraded Mail App

The Mail app is also getting a big upgrade. It will include a feature like Gmail that automatically categorises upcoming messages.

AI-Created Custom Emojis

This feature might look interesting to you, here’s more explanation about it. This feature will use AI to create custom emojis based on the prompts and commands by the users. So, the users will get rid of the long-time-built emoji library.

Transcribe Recordings

The company will be adding the ability to automatically transcribe recordings. The Google Pixel smartphones and several third-party recording apps already had this feature for years.

Implementation of AI in the Photos App

Apple’s AI is coming to the Photos app as well. This will play a similar role that many Android smartphones already have- the ability to edit photos, enhance the image, remove a person or object from the image and more.

These are the expected AI features to be unveiled on the Apple WWDC 24.

Now, as we mentioned earlier, there will be several other software upgrades as well. So, how can we miss that, here are the other software upgrades by Apple.

The Software Upgrades by Apple in iOS 18

Here are a few software upgrades by Apple expected to be announced during the WWDC 24.

Home Screen Customizations

If you are an Android User, then you will be shocked after getting to know that in iPhones, you can’t place an app icon in a specific place, all icons need to be arranged together without any gap. But in iOS 18, users will be able to place icons wherever they choose on their home screen. Along with that, for the first time, the icon Colours can be changed, just like you can turn all your finance apps into green and social media apps into blue as you wish.

It is the biggest upgrade by Apple in the last 17-year history. But on the other hand, it is a very basic thing every Android of any price has had for years.

Updated Control Center

The Control Center is also getting an upgrade, allowing the shortcut buttons to be rearranged within the Control Center. It will also have a new music widget with an updated interface for controlling smart home appliances.

Revamped Settings App

The settings app of the iPhone is also getting updated on iOS, iPadOS and MacOS with a focus on improved navigation, better organization and a more reliable search.

A Calculator App for iPad

Apple has revamped the Calculator app and is bringing it to the iPads finally. On iPad and Mac, the Calculator will have the overall same interface, like the round buttons that currently iPhones have.

Updated Calendar App

The calendar app is also getting updated. With the ability to bring in the data from the Reminders app. This will ensure to provide a better experience for the users.

Updated Health App

The Health app is getting updated including the improved blood pressure data management. This might be done as to as a preparation for future Apple Watches to have hypertension detection.

With that, the health app will also support a new hearing test feature on Apple’s AirPods. However, this may not be announced now, maybe later.

WatchOS 11

The WatchOS 11 will add an updated Siri interface which format responses depending upon the type of the query. Some major changes will be there to apps like Fitness.

These are the expected updates and changes to be announced during the Apple WWDC 24 with a main focus on AI (Apple Intelligence) and then several software upgrades, some of which are really amazing and useful that were missing in iOS for a long time, but already present in Androids and got better with time. But now they are announcing which is a good thing, and it will improve the user experience for sure with a great implementation of AI in the device and the apps.
